Fic: Damages

Jack Harkness stood in the conference room and scowled down at Ianto Jones. Gwen hovered at his side, trying to draw him into a better mood. On the table behind him was the official damage tally. It listed plenty of reasons to scowl: three dead, tons of equipment damage, and a senior member of the team found committing unpardonable offenses.
Inside the privacy of his own skull was a very different damage tally. Dead: one Cyberwoman who should have been dead anyway and two civilians. No other casualties. For a Cybermen attack, that was almost miraculous.
Damaged: lots of office equipment, all replaceable. All damage contained to the base, so they didn't have any covering up to do. Very good. And Myfeny proved to be a wonderful watch-pterodactyl.
Personnel: no injuries more serious than bumps and bruises, thank God. No one would even need a day off, which was good because they'd all have to pitch in to get the place operational again and repair the security breach.
Ianto and his crimes: Jack Harkness fought to keep the corners of his mouth down, resulting in a ferocious glare. With an effort he kept his hands folded in front of him. He wanted to shout out Ianto's name, run down, and kiss the man; but now was definitely not the time. He knew Ianto was cute and a good administrator, but the man had to be a genius to pull all this off without getting caught. Oh, what Jack could do with all of that skill at his disposal, instead of just the fraction Ianto had publicly displayed earlier. Run rings around both the Welsh authorities and Torchwood London, and that was just for starters.
And Ianto's loyalty to Lisa. It had been decades since he had seen devotion like that! Did the man have any idea how rare it was? Sure it had been misguided, and Ianto now hated his guts, but Jack could work with that. Ianto still wanted to work for Torchwood. Give him time to calm down and then slowly, subtly redirect that loyalty towards Torchwood and Jack. Give him a new direction for all that passion and a second chance to prove himself worthy, and Ianto could make a superb castellan. Then it would be look out world, here comes Torchwood!
It would be disastrous to even hint at those plans now. Now was the time to look furious, which wasn't hard because he really was furious about the debacle. Later on when Ianto began to get over the shock, he could appear to relent and begin to plant the seeds of Ianto's seduction. A good con is all about timing.
Looks, brains, and unswerving loyalty? Oh yeah, Jack Harkness was having all of that.

Date: 2006-11-09 06:22 pm (UTC)A lot of people around here (myself included) have been rather hard on Ianto... But he did have the brains to keep his Cybergirlfriend a secret for a really long time. And loyalty is an admirable quality :D
I'm inclined to agree with Jack: Quite a catch, that Mr. Jones!
Like others who have commented before me, I love that last line.

This line doesn't sit well with me, Ianto's not been on any missions (so far) I'm not sure I see him as a senior member, infact at this precise moment in time he doesn't feel like part of the team at all (to me) notice he's not involved in the Basketball game and isn't invited to the pub afterwards....
Just an observation but I look forward to more of this.

Date: 2006-11-09 10:03 pm (UTC)Trying to figure out the timeline of who got to Cardiff when/how long has Jack been in TW/etc makes my head hurt. If Ianto's been there longer than anyone but Jack, then everyone else's arrival is well past Doomsday, and yet Eve said her take on Gwen was that she thought the team had worked together for years before she arrived. How big a time lapse is there between Doomsday and Everything Changes?
