After metaphorically turning up my nose at the idea of writing one for years, the mental gears are starting to turn towards a Merlin AU.  Inequality and social chaos lie at the heart of the Arthurian tales.  There's greater inequality now than there was then, and the social chaos is building.

ETA:  Just added this line to my notes Morgana will be the voice of reason and compassion in a woman's body.  Therefore it will be imperative for the bad guys to destroy her credibility.

Sorry to be late with this.  Life's been extremely bus lately.  Owl is crawling and standing up for whole seconds at a time and basically getting into everything, and on top of that I have Uther-fic crowding into my brain which must wait until after I've watched the last episode.  On with the meta....

We all realize by now that the Pendragons are a dysfunctional family.  Since Daddy Pendragon is also a Dark Age King a.k.a. absolute military dictator a.k.a. tyrant, that means Camelot is a dysfunctional kingdom.  This episode focuses on the methods used by both his offspring and his subjects to cope.

"That's the best unicorn story I've ever seen," my husband said when the credits rolled.  This episode examined Arthur in a story rich in Early Western European religious symbolism.

Confession time:  I've always hated teen shows that revolve around sex and/or high school.  One of the reasons I enjoy Merlin is because it breaks that mold.  But just because there's no school doesn't mean there are no tests.

This episode packed a lot of punches into a very short time, so this essay has a lot of play-by-play.  Sorry about that.

We begin with Nimue turning a dead knight into a zombie.  Cut to Arthur's 21st birthday party and investiture as Crown Prince, which if I remember correctly means he will no longer have to have a Regent appointed when his father dies but can assume the throne directly.  Why do I feel an inappropriate birthday present coming up?

(Geez hon, most people settle for a bottle of whiskey or a blow-up doll.)

"That's the darkest thing we've watched in a while," my husband said.  I agreed.  This episode rivaled the darker episodes of Torchwood.

Now we're rocking again.

Remember what I said about events taking certain shapes in Episode 4?  Go back and reread it if you like, because in the second episode by The Poisoned Chalice writer Ben Vanstone it's starting to happen.

There are over one hundred characters in the full-blown Arthurian Legends.  In my opinion the most difficult by far to write well is Lancelot.  If Arthur and Merlin are the foundation, then Lancelot is the keystone.  His strengths and virtues bind together the soaring arch of Arthurian Chivalry, and his weaknesses bring it crashing down.  So it is absolutely essential that any retelling establish at Lancelot's introduction his strength, his courage, his valor, his selflessness, his beauty, his kindness, his respect and utter adoration for Arthur, his love of Guenevere, his desperation to do anything to prove himself, and his fatal willingness to let those he cares about talk him into doing things that he knows are bad ideas.
