On the way back from church yesterday we stopped for dinner at Luigi's Family Restaurant in Louisville, which turned out to be a diner.  (That wasn't clear from the outside.)  We took the opportunity to introduce the girls to two of their offerings -- a "meat and three" and a Chick tract.  They weren't impressed with either, although the meal was at least comprehensible.  They thought the Chick tract was weird and stupid.   They far preferred Fred Van Lente's parody and with good reason.  Van Lente's a very funny writer.  I miss his work on Marvel Adventures.

We won't be going back to the diner, though.  Chick tracts insult 99.9% of the human race and God as well.  Jack's going to have some explaining to do on Judgement Day.

"The Assignment". As far as Chick tracts go it was only mildly insulting, but the operative phrase is "as far as Chick tracts go".

*goes to have a look* Hmmm. I just finished Iain M. Bank's "The Hydrogen Sonata" last night - a novel the size of a phone directory. Chick has managed to pack his own tale of powerful beings wrecking the lives of ordinary people with their smug behind-the-scenes interference into just a few pages. Very efficient.

But a rubbish plotter. Since the angels and the demons can influence people so effectively, why don't they just whisper right in ear of the guy they're trying to save? I ask yew.

I doubt the intended audience reads much.

I went a-Googling for a it. Doesn't believe in keeping things short and to the point, does he. It meanders about all over the place. And which side is he on, exactly?! Christianity is represented by an irritating teenage girl, and the bad guys (devils, presumably, or just the rest of us) look pretty cool.

Proselytising annoys me at the best of times, but badly written proselytising is just plain insulting.

His side believes that good people who don't attend his particular church will suffer in Hell for all eternity while bad people who have a deathbed conversion to his church will spend eternity in Heaven. If you follow that thought to it's logical conclusion, the only people who benefit from that belief are bad people.
