I don't remember whether I was in junior high or high school--certainly the mid-'60s--when I read an article in Analog by John W. Campbell expressing dismay that a "business model" was being applied to running U.S. military services. Now, Campbell was an authoritarian, social Darwinist old coot, but he knew that the purpose of the military is entirely different from that of business, & that applying a business model of operation to them was downright nuts. Since then it seems to have become an article of faith that the business model should be applied to every social institution, regardless of function, & that in the fact of the catastrophic dysfunctions of business we've seen over the last 30 years. I'm left wondering when people became so brainwashed about the inherent virtuousness of business & its mode of operation that they can't see failure after failure of businesses over decades & not figure out that the business model is not only not applicable to other institutions, but isn't even failsafe for business!
