Some religious characters do tend to be written extremely boring. I put that down to laziness on the part of the writers.

Fundamentalism is a nuance more than a sect, but I have known Presbyterians who were proud to be Fundamentalists.
I'm not Rahne's biggest fan, but when she's written well she can be a very good character. You have to have a good writer with few hangups about conservative Christians for her to be written well. It's a question of baggage. Forex, I enjoy Incorruptible, but the main character is such a conservative Christian stereotype that if I had read it while I was still in the church or only a few years after leaving it I would have hated him because of all the negative baggage I had associated with it.
