Ianto stared into the grey afternoon sky. The team had been up all night tracking down a malfunctioning alien device. At least they hoped it was malfunctioning and didn't emit carcinogenic gas by design. After they got it contained Jack gave them the day off and sent them home. Ianto lay in his bed and tried to go back to sleep.

Funny how he never felt tired while caring for Lisa. He slept when his body told him it was time to sleep and there was nothing else to do. The Hub had a tiny "guest room" off the shower, but no one ever used it. The others sacked out on the couch. They thought Ianto had used it, but he had crept down to Lisa's chamber and slept on a camp cot beside her bed, holding her hand and dreaming strange dreams full of shining metal and white silk threads.

Now he felt tired all the time. When he wasn't working he came home, lay down, and fell in and out of a twilight daze. He preferred working.

He couldn't lay there any longer today. It occurred to him as he got out of bed that he was going to miss tonight's practice session with Jack. The workouts helped him relax and sleep better.

He heard a knock on the door. He opened it and found Jack Harkness standing there. Ianto was surprised. Jack had never visited him before, or any of the others as far as he knew.

"Hello. Can I come in?" Ianto nodded and stood aside. Jack walked in and stared around in fascination.

Ianto's eyes followed Jack's gaze. The furniture was in place, but packing boxes still lined the walls. Most of the furnishings were still inside them. Lisa's things were all set neatly in place, down to the PDA and the picture frames.

"Why are you here, Jack?"

Jack turned to look at Ianto. "You wanted to talk about Lisa when we were camping. I'm here to talk about Lisa."

Ianto felt like he'd been punched in the stomach. "I don't want to talk about Lisa to you. You killed her. I know you had a reason, but you still killed her."

Jack nodded. "Fair point. But I think I deserve a chance to learn about who I killed." He glanced around the room again. His eyes came to rest on a photograph of Lisa at a marathon. "She was a runner."

"She loved to race. She loved challenges." Ianto picked up the photo album and sat down on the couch. He didn't know if he wanted to talk about Lisa or if he wanted to hurt Jack by talking about Lisa, but the urge to talk welled up inside him.

Jack sat down beside him. Ianto opened the album and began to talk. He told the story of every photo in the book, from their first date to the last page. Ianto poured out stories of Lisa's love of life, of music, or contests, of her work for Torchwood, of people.

Jack listened quietly. After Ianto finished speaking he sat still for a long time, then said, "She sounds like a wonderful women. I wish I'd met her."

"You did."

"Did I?"

"You --"

"Did I?"

Ianto gave up. Jack had a point. Lisa hadn't been acting like herself at the end. But Ianto wasn't going to admit that to Jack.

"Why are you here, Jack?"

"You deserve a chance to talk about Lisa. The others deserve not to hear it if they don't want to."

"But why are you here? Why are you keeping me around? I know Torchwood procedures, I should be in a body bag by now."

Jack frowned at Ianto. "You know Torchwood procedures. You don't know my procedures." He sighed. "Look. A long time ago, I messed up as badly as you did. I didn't even have love as an excuse. I was given a second chance too."

"You were going to kill me that day."

"At that point you were an enemy combatant. You do what you have to do. But I wanted to salvage you if I could. I could use someone of your talents and drive working for me, not at cross-purposes." Jack reached over and patted Ianto's thigh.

Ianto stared off into the distance and nodded. Jack got up and walked to the door. "I've got to get back to work."

"Is that all?" Ianto asked abruptly.

"What?"

"Is that your only reason for keeping me?"

Jack looked confused. "What?"

Ianto plunged on. "I thought for a while there you fancied me. I'm tainted now. You could put any conditions you wanted on my staying. Make me do anything."

Jack glared at him. "Would that count as rape or extortion by the current definitions? Or sexual slavery? I can never keep up with the changes. Bad idea no matter what you call it. And you know why?"

"Why?"

Jack grinned wickedly. "Because you're everything I like. You're pretty, smart, gutsy, cool-headed, and you get things done. If I tried that you'd figure out a way to kill me in my own bed."

Ianto couldn't help laughing. "Probably." He got up and walked to the door to let Jack out.

Jack turned in the doorway before he went out. "One thing, Ianto. This is your second chance. You don't get a third."

"Yes sir."

Oooh, nice ending. My favourite line: ""At that point you were an enemy combatant. You do what you have to do. But I wanted to salvage you if I could." I like his reasoning.

[identity profile] crabby-lioness.livejournal.com 2006-12-09 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm shocked. You got that in before I even finished cross-posting it!

We don't have lives, do we? :) Thanks.

[identity profile] fajrdrako.livejournal.com 2006-12-09 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. I was so delighted to see you posted part 3 that I jumped right into it!

We don't have lives, do we? :)

Hee. I have a great life. Torchwood and LJ are parts that keep it fun.

Oooh I do so love this story. Can't wait for the next chapter *wink* good luck with the shoulder (I'm not sure whats wrong but I hope you feel better anyway!)

Thank you. I've got a sprained shoulder from spending too much time on the computer and letting my muscles get flabby. I need to exercise more, even though it would mean less time to write fanfic. :(

Just read all three parts (no idea how I missed it before) and I really like them XD

"One thing, Ianto. This is your second chance. You don't get a third."

Love that last line, very Jack. It's still ringing pretty true to me.

It feels here as if there's a barrier in Ianto's mind that's got to break, and soon. Whether it washes away or gets demolished seems to be the question.

Great fic, keep going!

Just caught up on all of this--damn, I'm looking forward to the last bit! (WIPs are such catch-22s for me, I hate being cliffhung but I'm too impatient to wait till it's all over.)

[identity profile] crabby-lioness.livejournal.com 2006-12-11 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! WIPs are catch-22s to write too. I know where its going and some of the places it'll visit along the way, but I don't have time to write it all out at once.

Great stuff - you've got Ianto's and Jack's voices down beautifully ;-)

This is great, very good characterization here - I can really hear the voices.

I love Jack's "you're everything I like" - perfect. And he just shows up at Ianto's place! I like that he wanted to give him the chance to talk about Lisa, and share that with him.

[identity profile] crabby-lioness.livejournal.com 2006-12-11 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! That's a scene I wanted to see in the show.

[identity profile] cs-whitewolf.livejournal.com 2006-12-11 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It was nice of Jack to give Ianto the chance to talk about Lisa, you've really got Jack's 'voice' down wonderfully- there were a couple of lines in this that were so *him*. Very nicely done!

Peace,

Thank you! Part 4 is in the works. I will say it's sensual without being very sexual.

[identity profile] belleimani.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I love Jack's reasoning. It's just so...Jack. Well done.

[identity profile] crabby-lioness.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm impressed you sat down and read the whole story in 20 minutes!

Heh. When I find something I like I read!

[identity profile] crabby-lioness.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well check out the rest of this site. It's full of my Jack and Jack/Ianto fic. You've only read about half of them.

Let's Talk About Lisa

(Anonymous) 2007-01-06 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
LOVE IT! Hell, it's about time people actually talked about the grief, about those gone ahead. Is it a new fashion BBC thing that I keep noticing with the Torchwood series? this insistance that there is no afterlife? Neither reincarnation, or the tunnel with light at the end (Pretty well proven if you talk to folks who have had to come back. Especially interesting when they describe relatives they could not know existed.

Re: Let's Talk About Lisa

[identity profile] crabby-lioness.livejournal.com 2007-01-06 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm writing this story based largely on my personal experience with the grief process after the death of my son. There's two seperate issues here. The first issue is the effect grief has on the survivors. That's the one I'm writing about. The second issue is if there is life after death. I'm not writing about that one at this time. We could argue over how much or how little the second issue is covered, but it still gets ten times the coverage of the first issue.

I have some personal opinions on the question of life after death, but everyone makes the same journey through grief regardless of what we believe.

Oh I do like this very much, and I love Jack's slow, subtle seduction. I do hope you'll write a load more on this! Thanks for sharing.

[identity profile] crabby-lioness.livejournal.com 2007-02-11 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I've got about half the next chapter done. I'll come back to it after I finish the Post-Mortem saga.

[identity profile] canadianautumn.livejournal.com 2007-05-24 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
hee! crabby_lioness, this story is completely amazing. you write them so well.

BUT YOU SERIOUSLY HAVE TO POST THE NEXT PARTS NOW. OR I MIGHT EXPLODE FROM THE EXCITEMENT.

you don't want to have my little guts all over your conscience do you? *puppy eyes*

[identity profile] crabby-lioness.livejournal.com 2007-05-24 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
you don't want to have my little guts all over your conscience do you? *puppy eyes*

Oh dear no. And I don't want them all over my keyboard either. :P

Part 4 is about 2/3rds done. I was going to wait until I had finished the entire arc I'm working on now before I finished it. Then I started writing Ten. Arrgh! He's giving me so much trouble trying to weasel out of his heart-to-heart talk with Jack that as soon as I've through with him I'm going to finish Part 4 and post it. I'll need a break after that!

Whimper

[identity profile] chinablues.livejournal.com 2011-02-18 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Part 4 is locked? I think I promised my first born to the IRS but I have some family jewels I might be able to part with. What do I need to do? I'm really liking your characterizations here, so nice to read their inner voices and ulterior motives. Please, l want more.

[identity profile] musicaluvr.livejournal.com 2011-06-02 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Please how do I get to read the last part? Part 4 is locked, can please, pretty please unlock it?

Hi,

Thanks!
