I totally agree with you on the producers' protectiveness, which is understandable given their agenda. And that perfectly satisfied my fangirl side's need.

Put those irrational feelings aside, I have to say the back and forth kissing scene could be a bit more subtle. But that's mostly due to the sloppy camera work, which probably have something to do with the budget, which make me want to chock those American TV producers to death, why can't you guys be a bit less conservative... Ok, that's probably the audiences' fault.

Any way, back to what I was saying, I can deal with the Cyberwoman one, that's not bad, except JB probably started snogging and tough a bit to early, this dude really needs to lay back a bit; on the other hand, the one in the ep3, which made almost every one squeak, its switch back to Tosh/Tommy was so haste that I immediately wanted to slap the montage people on the head... 2 seconds too early, you people!!! sloppy, really sloppy.

Now, move back to comparison (this is really fun to talk about).
I went back to looked at all of those relationships through out the series, specifically seeking dual images which directly reflect Jack and Ianto.
Then I sees a progress from Gwen/Owen to Gwen/Rhys.

In the beginning, the Jack/Ianto relationship was the perfect shadow of the gwen/owen relationship:
1. First we have the Cyberwoman, the back and forth kissing scene which really gave me the impression that Owen likes to go down with a shag, but none the less, the parallel was precise.
2. In the Country side, we have that that silly little chatting topic which made me seriously wonder how old was Gwen. But ignore the school girlish stupidity, we can once again see that clear dual image: Gwen/Owen in the front delivering their lines out loud, and then there was the silent stare, the other pair hiding behind the veil, mimicking the same act in silence. Thus when Gwen end up up in Owen's apartment, I had to wonder what the other two were doing at that moment, since up till that point their relationship were the exact shadow of Gwen/Owen.
3. Then there is something about Mary. Here is where the shadow break away from the object, I guess. Secret is out, thus game over. As those who manage to keep their secrets, got to keep playing.

[Oh, the stop watch... still gives me creeps. I definitely agree with you on the duration part, but I'm not sure about the propriety under that circumstance. After all, I'm not a big fan of kinkiness, which according to the most recent spoiler, that exactly was Jack's cup of tea .
Btw, have you notice, Jack only have a drink every time he lost a lover. Though I'm not really sure how to interpret Ianto having a drink in his office and he's drinking water. (I'm over analyzing only b/c British screen writers appeared to be pretty into subtle details like that.)]

I would say the dual image of Gwen/Rhys and Jack/Ianto was established in "the end of days", only after the experience of lost and regain. This time, it is no longer a shadow image, but two sides of a mirror I would call "a serious relationship", completely different yet one and the same. And this dual image is continue progressing into stability in Season 2.

And from here, I can so bluntly say that Gwen is Jack's mirror image (at least in some ways), different yet the same, especially the humanity part. Jack may think himself lack of humanity, but in truth he had it all along. The longing to be more close to humanity is precisely an expression of humanity itself. While he envy the passion and love Gwen has toward life, he didn't realize himself had the exact same compassion inside of him, on a more subtle but grander scale. After all, he is the hero of the show.
